What Fasting Insulin Level Actually Matters for ADHD?
Fasting insulin is the most under-ordered lab in conventional care, and arguably the most important one here. Standard reference ranges call it "normal" up to roughly 25 µIU/mL. That threshold is permissive enough that real insulin resistance can be underway while every number still reads as fine. Many functional medicine practitioners instead use a working target of under 8 µIU/mL.
Why it's relevant to ADHD specifically: a 2015 mouse study found that insulin resistance in the brain alters dopamine turnover and produces anxiety- and depression-like behavior.¹ That's been shown in mice, not yet directly tested in perimenopausal women with ADHD — a plausible pathway, not a settled one.
